ACTU Holds Seminar at CRIN

The Institute’s Chapter of Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) held her seminar at the Institute on June 19, 2023 at the Lawrence Opeke Conference Hall. In attendance were officials of ICPC, Ibadan office, Mr. Tope Egunjobi and Mrs. Agnes Komolafe. The Executive Director, Dr. Patrick Adebola was ably represented by the Director, Human Resources and Administration, Mr. Onatunde-Onanuga. The Acting ACTU Chairperson, Mrs O.O. Adeigbe welcomed the participants to the seminar. Dr. A.R. Adedeji, Director Research Outreach and former CRIN ACTU Chairman’s presentation centred on benefits and penalties related to ICPC/ACTU in MDA which includes: enhanced transparency, improved accountability, deterrent effects and capacity building; while Prosecution and Legal Consequences, criminal charges, fines, and imprisonment, asset forfeiture, seizing properties, freezing bank accounts etc were some of the penalties for offenders. The ICPC official, Mr. Egunjobi, in his address stated that ACTU is one of the tools that promote the ICPC preventive mandate; ACTU can perform all the functions of ICPC but cannot prosecute. The body is not expected to witch-hunt staff but work with them in tandem. He attributed the following as some of the fallout of the endemic corruption in Nigeria: high price of PMS, collapse of refineries, Inaccessible health facilities even with NHIS and a myriad of other attendant social and economic ills. He commended CRIN for geometric increase in her ethics and integrity report by the commission from about 63% in 2022 to over 80% in 2023.
